A World with Superpowers--Telepathy (pt. 2)

What would our world be like if we could read minds?

Would there be better social order or would it be complete chaos?

I thought through a world where telepathy was as normal as normal could get.

Want to have a glimpse of what a world with telepathy would be like? Then keep reading.

To begin, lets define what telepathy is:

telepathy

[tuh-lep-uh-thee]

noun

  1. communication between minds by some means other than sensory perception.

(Dictionary.com definition)

In this definition, remembering communication through “other means than sensory perception” means, transferring thoughts and or ideas without using senses--hearing, vision, and taste to name a few.

Telepathy + Honesty

If we, as a society, had the ability to read minds as a “social norm” would we be a more honest and loving society? Or would our uncontrolled thoughts make everything hectic?

Thinking of telepathy in a positive way, we would be more honest with each other. If all our thoughts were susceptible to our best friends and even strangers, I believe we as a society would be more loving and caring to one another. Knowing what a complete stranger is going through at any moment in time would bring people together without even trying. A stranger could communicate to you without physically having to show that they are talking to you. A stranger may give you advice based on experience.

However, when any person can read your thoughts at any given time, it means they can read not only your positive thoughts, but also the negative and secretive ones. Banking accounts would be hacked easily, identity theft would become common, and friendships ruined. Yeah you read that right, friendships ruined.

As human beings we think things we don’t necessarily mean. Thinking things we don't necessarily mean helps us figure out our own feelings and form unique opinions.

Figuring out our own thoughts and feelings can take from quick minutes to months. What if one of your friends read your mind while you were thinking something through? They may be offended at first and possibly even infuriated that you thought of that. On the plus side, your friends may be understanding to the fact that we all have our sinful, meaningless thoughts and dismiss them like nothing.

Picture this: Mark and John are best friends; Mark got a new girlfriend. John really liked Mark’s girlfriend. Mark overheard these thoughts using his telepathic abilities. Mark and John got in a heated argument over the fact that John really liked girlfriend. Mark ended up forgiving his best friend; however he never could forget it what John was thinking. He became overly protective of his girlfriend around John.

School:

School would be a hard thing if we had telepathic abilities. Academic dishonesty would hinder the amount of actual learning you would retain. If you could just talk to your friend during a test to get answers, then why would you actually try and study?

If you couldn’t retain the knowledge you're supposed to learn, it would affect how well you can do a job. Our telepathic society would go rather brainless.

Final Thoughts:

As cool as telepathy seems, and how cool it would be to change the world in a positive loving way, I believe the negatives outweigh the positives.

In conclusion, I believe telepathy would hinder the world more than help it. A world with telepathy wouldn't be that great.

Would you want to live in a world with telepathy?

Was there something I missed that you think would be important to a world with this superpower?
